Man to plead guilty to fed charges The AdvocateMichael P. Mayko Published 8:20 pm, Wednesday, March 20, 2013 NEW HAVEN -- Daniel Monteiro was told if his name appeared on a check, it would "help him if he needed anything down the line."    At least, that's what the FBI recorded during its investigation of "roll-your-own" smoke store owners using money in an attempt to kill legislation last year that would have taxed and licensed their businesses.  On Wednesday, Monteiro, a 33-year-old University of Connecticut graduate and co-owner of Villwell Builders in Wolcott, admitted to U.S. District Judge Janet Bond Arterton that he put his name on a $2,500 check to help bankroll the congressional campaign of former state Speaker of the House Chris Donovan.  Continue reading at ….. http://www.stamfordadvocate.com/local/article/Man-to-plead-guilty-to-fed-charges-4371550.php

Assistant U.S. Attorney Christopher Mattei wants David Moffa of Middlebury, a 57-year-old retired corrections officer and a former state union president, to serve two years in prison for his role in a conspiracy "designed to subvert democratic institutions in the state."  Moffa, who pleaded guilty to a conspiracy charge by allowing his wife's name to be placed on a $2,500 check funded by others, will be the first person U.S. District Judge Janet Bond Arterton sentences in this case. Subpoenas Show Federal Probe At State Capitol Is Expanding   March 16, 2013|By EDMUND H. MAHONY and JON LENDER,  Mahony@courant.com, The Hartford Courant A federal bribery and conspiracy investigation that grew out of efforts to kill a tobacco tax at the state legislature has widened in recent months to include how the state appropriated tens of millions of dollars through bonding.The direction of the investigation is apparent in the language of subpoenas served by federal prosecutors in October and November of 2012 on employees of the state General Assembly.
