Connecticut Taxpayers Will Pay $125 Million for

State Workers To Get Raises Of 5 Percent To 6 Percent

The Hartford Courant

12:12 a.m. EDT, June 27, 2013

The vast majority of the state's 45,000 unionized and non-unionized employees will begin getting raises of 5 to 6 percent on Monday, when the state's new fiscal year begins, officials said Tuesday. The cost of the raises has been budgeted at $125 million for the 12-month fiscal period that ends June 30, 2014, although it might not end up being that high, depending on vacant positions and other factors, said Ben Barnes, budget chief for Gov. Dannel P. Malloy…….. The highest longevity payments for non-union managers are $12,000 or $13,000 a year. Take for example an employee whose annual payments total $12,000. Dividing that by 26 comes out to $461 — which is the amount that would be added to that employee's paycheck from now on…….As of April of 2011, more than 3,000 non-unionized employees were receiving longevity payments, with about 1,000 of them getting two such payments of at least $2,500 each year. Since then, some of those employees have retired and no new totals were available Tuesday….. As of April 2011, 25,433 unionized state employees were receiving longevity payments totaling $23 million a year. Again, retirements have diminished those totals, but no new figures were available Tuesday.  Continue reading at… http://www.courant.com/news/politics/hc-malloy-raises-0626-20130625,0,6670783.story

REPORT State economy headed for crisis

Connecticut's massive long-term debt, deep pockets of poverty and more than 20 years of stagnant job growth threaten to sink the state's economy for decades unless major reforms are enacted, according to a report Wednesday from a national fiscal responsibility group and the University of Connecticut's economic think-tank.
