As young children learn to identify shapes, they love to spot them in any setting. Below is a way to incorporate God’s love into a lesson that teaches and reviews different shapes.
(Setup for Option 1: Cut out multiple copies of each shape. Place them around the room and have each child find the specified shape. Example: “There are circles placed around the room. Please walk around, find a circle, and return to your spot with the circle.” Repeat this for each shape. This method will allow children to move throughout the lesson.)
(Setup for Option 2: Cut out one large copy of each shape. Hold up each shape and ask the children to draw the shape in the air as you begin to discuss the shape.)
Circle—Look at the circle! There is no beginning and no ending. It just keeps going around and around. God’s love is also never ending. It has no beginning and no end. There is nothing you can think, say, or do that will ever make God stop loving you! His love just keeps going.
Diamond—Diamonds are valuable, sparkly stones. They are often worn by kings, queens, princes, and princesses. Jesus is our King who wears a crown up in heaven! You are also a treasure to God. Jesus has prepared a place for you up in heaven because he has forgiven all your sins, and you are one of God’s most treasured creations. He thinks you sparkle and shine!
Cross—What do you think of when you see a cross? When we see a cross, we remember that Jesus died on the cross to save us from our sins. Did Jesus stay dead? No! He rose from the dead and now lives in heaven!
Triangle—Does anyone know what it means when a word begins with tri-? It means three! Have you ever noticed that you have three wheels on your TRIcycle? Look at how the triangle has three points and lines that connect the points to each other. The triangle reminds us of the three persons of God.
- God the Father—Created the world and all people. He sent Jesus down to earth.
- God the Son—God came to earth as a human. Jesus lived a perfect life on earth and died on the cross and rose from the dead to save us from our sins.
- God the Holy Spirit—The Spirit of God who creates faith in our hearts and helps us to live out God’s commands.
God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit are all connected to one another just like the lines of the triangle connects the points to one another.
