A superior court judge ruled Wednesday that the
superintendent of Connecticut's
largest public school system must vacate his job immediately.
Brigeport Superintendent Paul Vallas
had been hoping he could remain on the job while the city appealed an earlier
ruling by the same judge that found he does not qualify for the job.

Gov. Dannel P. Malloy said
Wednesday that despite a judge ruling that the superintendent of Bridgeport is not
eligible to run the district, he supports him staying in office.
"Do I think someone that someone who was superintendent
of Chicago, Philadelphia,
New Orleans is
qualified to be a superintendent in the state of Connecticut? The answer is yes," Malloy
said.

State officials are seeking flexibility in implementing the U.S. Department of Education's accountability
measures to avoid students being double-tested during the roll-out of the

In announcing the move Wednesday, state officials said they
will also seek flexibility on implementing new teacher evaluations that

Thousands more children get free meals

Thousands more children are showing up for school each year
in need of a free- or reduced-priced breakfast and lunch.
And while 28,008 more students over the last 10 years are
now being fed at free or reduced rates during the regular school year, state
officials are trying to also boost the number of children getting fed during
the summer vacation months.
Their motto: All children eat free.
The only requirement to get a free meal at any of the more
than 400 locations is that the children are 18 years old or younger.

Congress stumbles over student loan problem

Washington –- A deeply divided Congress has failed to meet a
deadline to stop a sharp spike of the interest rate charged on a popular
college loan, ensuring that interest on those loans will double on Monday.
“Unfortunately, this is just another instance of partisan
gridlock in Congress,” said Abe Scarr, director of ConnPIRG, a public interest group lobbying to keep college
loan rates low.
